I started my professional career in 1994 with a salary of $26k. 

Within five years, I had moved from an entry level job of Production Assistant to a Project Manager to a Production Department Manager with a team of 12. 

I increased my salary  to over $100k, but every increase in my job title and salary came because I negotiated it. 

The accolades were always there, my boss was generous with his praise. 

But I was working long hours to prove myself and watching as other, less qualified people got promoted before me. 

At one point, I got so frustrated that I almost cried in front of my boss. 

I just didn’t know what to do. 

Working harder wasn’t working. 

I finally learned that if I wanted to advance my career and make more money, I would have to find a way to ask for it, justify it and feel like I DESERVED IT! 

I learned some simple techniques to change the way I was talking to my boss about my salary and my job.

And how to recover from a “no” when times were rough in the economy or the money wasn’t there (like your boss says, “We don’t have the budget now…”). 

Not only to recover from my own feelings of shame and rejection, but to keep the door open so I could have the conversation again when things picked up again. 

Later in my career, when I was pregnant with my son, I negotiated to take all the parts of my job that I loved and give up the things I didn’t. I asked for and got  a 30-hpur work week so I could spend time at home with my son. 

And when I was ready to come back full time, I negotiated a schedule and pay rate that  matched what I wanted. I didn’t get it all up front every time. But I know how to keep the door open for mid-year meetings with goals that match up to increases and/or bonuses.
